DENTURES |

A denture is a removable appliance that can be used to hold replacement teeth and adjacent tissues. It is made of acrylic resin, sometimes in combination with various metals. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position.
Complete dentures are either "replacement" or "immediate." A replacement denture is used to “replace” and existing denture that is worn out, does not fit well or is unaesthetic. Sometimes dentures can be “relined “ to make them look and fit better.
Dr. Svoboda usually uses “immediate dentures” for people who need to have teeth out in the front area of the mouth. These dentures allow the patient to leave the office with teeth after their failed natural teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures require more adjustment and fit related visits than replacement dentures for a number of reasons. First the technician must guess where the gums will end up after the surgery and there is usually no chance to try the denture in before the natural teeth are removed. Second the bone and gums remaining after tooth extraction shrink significantly in the months after surgery.
The immediate dentures are relined after 4 to 6 months to make them fit against the gums. This usually makes them a lot more retentive as well.
Dr. Svoboda considers all denture treatment as transitional treatment as the tissues under the denture continue to shrink as time goes by. This tissue shrinkage can be reduced by adding dental implants under the denture or replacing the denture completely with fixed bridges attached to dental implants.
